Last week 21 companies from the Fermanagh and Omagh District Council area attended our most recent Resource Matching Workshop at Omagh Enterprise Centre. After some early morning networking and introductions, the event got underway with a brief presentation on how Industrial Symbioses works. Practitioners brought along examples of current resources that need a solution and got ideas flowing in terms of what wasted resources the delegates might have to offer.
The workshop got underway after breakfast with facilitators coordinating the tables of businesses. After several rounds of discussions and resource matching, 153 potential synergies were identified. Even more impressive was the statistic that a £2.77m in cost savings could be achieved if these matches come to fruition. Staggering numbers for even a small number of businesses. From an environmental perspective 23,120 tonnes could be diverted from landfill if these businesses start working together.
The event finished with a short presentation from Martin McGirr of RecyCo, winner of the inaugural Industrial Symbiosis Service award. He talked about his experience with the service and how it has made a substantial difference in terms of additional sales and cost savings to the business. We were delighted to have him attend and hope it spurs on some other businesses to enter next years Sustainable Ireland Industrial Symbiosis award!
We run resource matching workshops regularly throughout the year and the next is scheduled for 8th November in Belfast. You can find out more information and register here
