Scott & Stinson

The Company

Scott & Stinson Engineering in Coleraine have been trading since 1991, originally fabricating gates, railings & wrought iron products.

The company expanded into the general engineering and fabrication sector working with mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium then into the precision market which now enables the company to manufacture finished assemblies in its workshops – one stop shop engineering. In 2013 the company developed a rapid prototyping service.

The Challenge

Kirchhoff Ireland, an engineering company based in Donegal, is an international Tier 1 supplier to the automotive sector with customers including BMW, Ford and VW. Kirchhoff attended an Intertrade Ireland cross-border trade event where it was made aware of the Industrial Symbiosis service. Kirchhoff asked if the service could help find businesses with available CNC machining and prototyping expertise to reverse engineer and manufacture nut dies.

The Solution

The Industrial Symbiosis Service was aware that Scott & Stinson Engineering had expertise and capacity in this area and introduced the company to Kirchhoff. Scott & Stinson was able to provide the required level of service within the tight cost and timeline required.

The Benefits

The synergy between these two companies would not have happened if they had not been introduced through the Industrial Symbiosis business network. It serves to illustrate that production capacity and expertise are resources that can be matched through Industrial Symbiosis.

As a result of this synergy Scott & Stinson was able to fill some of its production capacity and has benefited from supplying services in an export market. Scott & Stinson has also established a relationship with a new customer which is expected to bring further business opportunities.

“The introduction to Kirchhoff has helped Scott & Stinson to secure additional business for our machining and prototyping service. The Industrial Symbiosis service practitioner has been very helpful.”
