H&A Mechanical Services specialise in the installation, maintenance, and servicing of domestic gas, oil, and solid fuel heating systems. Further growth and diversification in the last few years enabled H&A Mechanical Services to develop Electrical, Property Maintenance, Domestic Servicing and Renewable Technologies expertise.
H&A Mechanical needed to find a disposal route for decontaminated oil storage tanks after being awarded a contract by several housing associations to install natural gas in houses.
The Industrial Symbiosis team was able to demonstrate that when redundant oil tanks were fully drained of oil and had the fittings removed they were classified as contaminated plastic and could be recycled by granulation and washing. This meant that 120 tonnes of plastic that would have been consigned to landfill could actually be recovered. With this knowledge the Industrial Symbiosis service identified a synergy with LWM, a company that specialises in the recycling of plastics.
Through the implementation of this synergy H&A Mechanical successfully diverted 120 tonnes of plastic from landfill and decreased CO2 emissions by 767t as a result. Overall the company was able to build a positive alliance with LWM to reduce waste, with the benefit of guidance from the Industrial Symbiosis service. This synergy has productively found a sustainable solution for a reusable resource.
“Expertise provided by the Industrial Symbiosis service has enabled us to divert waste materials from going to landfill. Together we have been able to come up with a solution so that these resources can be recycled.”
