Crowne Plaza Hotel

The Company

Belfast based hotel group Andras Hotels opened the first Crowne Plaza hotel in Northern Ireland following the upgrade and re-branding of its flagship property at Shaw’s Bridge.

The Challenge

The IS service had already established a relationship with Andras Hotels and approached the General Manager of the Crowne Plaza with the intention of offering resource efficiency support as it embarked on a major refurbishment of guest rooms.

The extensive plans detailed the refurbishment of 120 bedrooms over several phases whilst ensuring business as usual.  The General Manager was keen to see a reuse solution for furniture.  Items included; baths, wash-hand basins, sinks, mirrors, pictures, curtains, chairs, tables, drawer units, headboards, lamps, TVs, safes and wardrobe doors.

The Solution

The connections of the IS team enabled a selection of reuse options based on capability, storage capacity, short notice period and phased matching over 18 months.

East Belfast Mission is a social enterprise that runs fundraising activities to support the work of renewal and transformation in their local community.  Habitat for Humanity ReStore is a social enterprise that sells donated, new and used furniture at a low cost to families in need.

Selected bedroom furniture was collected by East Belfast Mission to be distributed across retail units in Belfast, Antrim, Newtownards and Larne.  Baths were collected by Habitat for Humanity ReStore.  Both social enterprises stand to generate much needed revenue through onward sales.

It is anticipated that this partnered matching will be replicated several times to facilitate the completion of the hotel’s refurbishment plans.

From the recommended list compiled by the IS team, the hotel selected 2 suitable outlets that met their needs and introductions were facilitated.

The Benefits

  • Cost Savings: £2530
  • CO2 Reduction: 17 tonnes
  • Diverted Landfill: 8 tonnes

“The IS Service is a fantastic opportunity for collaborated partnerships. Being able to send on our discarded furniture knowing that it will go to people in need helps make our business sustainable as well as avoiding considerable landfill costs.”
