Cityside Retail Park is located just north of Belfast city centre and offers over 20 stores with leading High Street names including Tesco, New Look, Asda Living, Sports Direct and Home Bargains. The Retail Park has recently completed a massive redevelopment of the site under new ownership.
Cityside Retail Park needed to clear a recently vacated retail unit of unwanted hard plastic play equipment and contacted the Industrial Symbiosis Service for advice and help.
The Industrial Symbiosis service contacted a number of companies that could offer potential solutions including reuse or recycling and passed their details on to Cityside Retail for follow-up. One of the reuse options was Limavady Community Development Initiative (LCDI). They could use the tubes and frames to set up a new children’s play area and could collect the material from Cityside within the limited timeframe.
This synergy was implemented quickly and enabled Cityside Retail to avoid costly, storage, skip hire and disposal costs. This synergy has also enabled Cityside Retail to demonstrate its corporate social responsibility.
LCDI was able to source redundant equipment that was ideally suited to their requirements. This saved them considerable time and staff costs in searching for play equipment and avoided the cost of new play equipment.
“The Industrial Symbiosis service provided a professional and focused response to our request for help. It is great that this equipment is getting another lease of life rather than going to landfill.”
