City Hotel Derry

The Company

The City Hotel Derry, an active IS member, is committed to the implementation of pro-active measures to help protect and care for the local, and global environment.

Some of the environmental impact activities include; training employees on environmental awareness and encouraging employees to work in an environmentally responsible manner. A Green Team consists of a member of staff from each department. The hotel is committed to Zero Waste to Landfill and they continuously seek to improve their environmental performance. They have also been awarded the Gold Star Accreditation by the Green Tourism Business Scheme.

The Challenge

During a recent review of resources, they asked the practitioner for advice on finding a sustainable method of disposing of redundant promotional PVC banners that had been used for events at the hotel. These had been collected and stored pending finding a suitable disposal route.

The Solution

The practitioner had worked with Obon on the Foyle – a local Japanese group of Taiko drumming enthusiasts based in Derry-Londonderry. They established FOYLE O-BON, an outreach programme and festival to celebrate and promote Japanese culture and arts in Northern Ireland.

They were seeking to source materials that could be used to make alternative Taiko style drums. The practitioner recommended the PVC banners as alternative drum skins. 3 banners were collected from City Hotel Derry and after prototyping and testing, were found to be suitable.

25 banners were collected and converted to drum skins.

The Benefits

  • Virgin Material Saved: 1 tonne
  • Diverted Landfill: 1 tonne

This has saved the hotel on disposal costs and helped them maintain their Zero Waste to Landfill objectives. Obon on the Foyle has also saved on the cost of purchasing new drum skins.

“The IS Service has developed a unique opportunity to help us meet our environmental accreditations with what we perceived to be redundant items. As well as sustainability targets, we had the opportunity to partner with a local community group knowing that they are being put to such creative and inspiring use.”
