The Challenge

Almac attended a Resource Matching Workshop where they discovered that there were potential outlets for their wasted resources. An Industrial Symbiosis practitioner subsequently visited their site to learn more about the materials they had available for other organisations. After a site tour, Almac declared a range of wasted resources including packaging, WEEE and metals. Although not large numbers in quantity, the practitioner identified that these materials would have value to another organisation.

The Solution

Almac attended a Resource Matching Workshop where they discovered that there were potential outlets for their wasted resources. An Industrial Symbiosis practitioner subsequently visited their site to learn more about the materials they had available for other organisations. After a site tour, Almac declared a range of wasted resources including packaging, WEEE and metals. Although not large numbers in quantity, the practitioner identified that these materials would have value to another organisation.

The Benefits

As a result of this introduction, a synergy was completed with 6 tonnes of wasted resources being diverted from landfill at a cost saving, including transport, of £660. Furthermore, there has been a reduction in green house gas emissions of 19 tonnes.

This synergy was aided by the fact that the organisations are located close to each other and transfer of materials was easily organised between both parties. Although the financial benefits of this synergy to Almac are relatively small, the greater importance of this synergy is that it diverts waste from landfill and helps a local charity to help others in the community.

Almac continue to engage with the IS service in the search for solutions for other waste streams.

“We are very happy with the introductions that have been made through this service and have built a positive working relationship with Crafty Bitzwhich we hope to continue in the future.”
